What is Shape Up CVS?
Shape Up CVS 2010
For 2010, Shape Up CVS is bringing back our popular team based challenge, with some new features and exciting program enhancements for our participants.
All nineteen eligible Distribution Centers will be invited to register for our upcoming challenge beginning on August 18th. Employees will have four weeks to form their teams, select their competition categories and get ready to compete.
This eight week challenge will kick off on September 20th. Participants can choose to track their pedometer steps, exercise minutes, and weight loss percentage. Every two weeks teams can report their results to us by visiting their online challenge headquarters, calling toll free Shape Up CVS Support at 1-877-287-7208, or using SMS–Text messaging to make reporting easier than ever.
Additionally participation and completion of our fun and easy Shape Up CVS eight week challenge will earn each employee four Employee Wellness points that count towards their annual insurance reimbursement. We will also recognize some top teams with gift cards to reward their effort and congratulate their success.
2008 and 2009 Shape Up CVS — A History of Remarkable Accomplishment
The Shape Up CVS program is a team–based wellness program that encourages associates to join together to be more active, eat better, and improve their health that is delivered online and via the telephone. In the program, employees form teams of five to eleven people and compete to walk the most number of pedometer steps, lose the most weight, and/or exercise the greatest number of hours. Each participant was provided with a start–up kit that included a Life Fitness pedometer, logbook, and access to the Shape Up CVS online activity tracker. To accommodate everyone, associates could participate in the program online or over the phone.
In its first year, the program exceeded its performance metrics: achieving a 22% participation rate (target 20%), a 70% retention rate (target 60%), and a 92% satisfaction rate (target 80%). Participants who completed the program lost on average 7.5 pounds (1.2 BMI points), and nearly a quarter of participants in the weight loss division lost 10 or more pounds. There were 115 participants who lowered their BMI status from overweight to healthy weight or from obese to overweight.
In 2009, building on the success of the launch program, Shape Up CVS achieved a 24% participation rate, and 89% employee satisfaction rate, and employees lost over 5,000 pounds during the challenge
Participants reported being very satisfied with the program, with 90% of participants planning to participate in the program next year. Over 96% of participants said they would recommend the program to a fellow co–worker and 82% of participants felt they were more physically active at the end of the program than they were at the start. Below are some of the comments participants submitted about the program:
“I have dropped 15 pounds and have increased my workout by an hour a day. Thanks to a great program!”
“I am a diabetic and the program helped me lower my blood sugar and the benefit was the fact that I feel much better. I have more energy and a better standard of life. Thanks CVS.”
“I feel so much better with myself. I am now confident about myself, and I have so much more energy than I ever had.”
“This was a great thing CVS did and I think they should continue to do programs like this one” “Not only the healthy aspect, it brought a closeness to our department and other work associates that we never really had something in common.”
“Overall I have gained more motivation and positive thinking that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. I feel wonderful today thanks to all the CVS people and my co workers. Love you all.”
The program reached a diverse population,80% of which had never participated in a wellness program at CVS Caremark before. Associates formed new friendships with colleagues and built a sense of community and camaraderie at their distribution centers. The Shape Up CVS program had a substantial effect not only on the physical health of the participating associates but also on their morale and emotional well–being.
